Welcome to the 4S community!

Following a summer of excitement in Hull, this Autumn we are ready to ‘Tell the World’ about our fabulous city! Throughout the term we will be shouting out about some of Hull’s heroes such as Clive Sullivan, Thomas Ferens and William Colbeck as we ask, "Whats our Story?"

As part of our exciting topic work, we will be visiting Feren’s Art Gallery on Thursday 19th October, 2017  to see the Turner Prize. More details to follow.

Literacy

This term the children will write a range of text types based on our class book, ‘The Firework-maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pullman. Our writing will include recounts, persuasion and narrative pieces. We will become more familiar with a wider range of sentence structures, grammatical features and spelling rules involving prefixes and suffixes.

Book Club

Our first Book Club text this year is Roald Dahl's, 'James and the Giant Peach'. Each Friday the children will have a section from the book to read at home as part of their weekly homework. We encourage you to read and enjoy this text together and ask that everyone brings their book back on Monday for our daily Book Club sessions.

Wider Opportunites

Year 4 children will take part in weekly music lessons in class which involve learning to play the clarinet.  We will be working towards a performance later in the year.

Marvellous Maths!

During the Autumn term, the children will become more confident in working with 4 digit numbers. They will secure their understanding of place value and with mental and written methods for the four operations then apply these to a variety of real life problems. Building on their work in Year 3, we will continue to practise times tables. Through our topic work, the children will work with data and measures.

Super Science!

First of all we will investigate where our food goes, learning about the digestive system and teeth. The children will be taking part in many hands on practical experiments and developing their scientific vocabulary. After  half term, we will be finding out all about solids, liquids and gases.

P.E.

Our PE day is Wednesday. This half term we are focussing on hockey so your child will require sturdy trainers, but without studs please. After half-term, we will be doing gymnastics. Please send your child with a pair of shorts which can be left in school for each week.
