Areas of the Curriculum

The Early Years Curriculum is split into 7 areas.

The Prime Areas (Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development) are a particular focus in Foundation Stage 1.

Communication and Language

Communication and Language
What's in the red box? This is one of the activities we do where the children take it in turns to select something from the red box. They then talk about what it is, what it might do, where they might find it or what they already know about it. It helps to broaden their vocabulary and improves their speaking and listening skills.

Physical Development

Physical Development

Children's fine and gross motor skills develop as they make the most of our resources and activities throughout the day, indoors and outdoors.

Personal Development

Personal Development
This area focusses on the children's ability to develop independence, make relationships, get along with others and learn how to stay safe and happy when they are in school.

Literacy

Literacy

We constantly encourage and introduce the children to a wide range of reading and writing materials. This is where their journey into literacy begins.

We invite the children to bring in their favourite book to share with the group. An invitation will be sent home with your child when it is their turn.

Mathematics

Mathematics

Numbers are all around us in Foundation Stage! As well as working in small groups to look at numbers and shapes, the children are constantly counting, playing and interacting with numbers all around the learning environment.

Understanding the World

Understanding the World

This area focusses on what the children know about the world around them and we give them plenty of chances to find things out for themselves as well as expanding on some of the knowledge they already have. They are always being encouraged to share what they know with each other and the members of staff.

Expressive Arts and Design

Expressive Arts and Design

The children have lots of opportunities to make and create in a variety of different ways, inside and out. They have unlimited access to materials, resources and musical intruments and are allowed to let their imaginations run away with them, creating all kinds of interesting pictures, models and music.

Stay and Play

We have regular Stay and Play events that provide an opportunity for your child to share their learning at school with you.

Also, you are welcome to spend time with your child at the start of each session on a daily basis.
